Our week began with Dusshera, a Hindu festival that celebrates the
Hindu god Ram’s victory over the demon king Ravana and the triumph of
good over evil. The epic Ramayana tells the story of Ram who wins
the lovely Sita as his wife, only to have her carried off by Ravana ,
the demon king of Lanka.
Enormous effigies of Ravana were burned on waste land near where we live - they were stuffed with fireworks and so the explosions were immense - quite an experience - not unlike our bonfire night.
The weeks are passing very quickly - it must be all the fun!!
We've had the lovely opportunity to welcome Gail Roach (some of you will know her from St Stephen’s) to Delhi… its wonderful to have her staying for a couple of weeks. She's never been to India or Delhi before so everything is new and exciting.
Gail was keen to get involved with our work and so we've been planning together, preparing materials and working out how to bring ‘dance/drama’ into our lessons (Gail's speciality!!). The children and students have been having a wonderful time and we're learning some new skills too! Very refreshing!!
Thursday evening saw Ken’s evening students helping in the kitchen showing us how to make ‘Cheela’ (a type of chapati) - we then shared a delicious meal together - a good way to practice all their English!
This weekend, we’ll be off to the markets for some essential shopping with Gail, and then site seeing around Delhi.
Onto the pictures….
Love
